Learning to read medical images can be a useful clinical correlation to the learning of human anatomy. Medical imaging uses multiple views to allow the reader to use visual-spatial abilities to increase knowledge and understanding of relationships between anatomical structures. Practice using an examination of structures from multiple viewpoints improves spatial learning, although the mechanism for this effect is not known. Students who successfully engage with and completed medical gross anatomy have improved visual-spatial abilities. Students who demonstrated strong visual-spatial abilities perform better on examinations in medical anatomy than those whose visual-spatial abilities are limited.
